June Artist of the Month: Tripper Dungan

June Artist of the Month: Tripper Dungan

June’s Artist of the Month is none other than Tripper Dungan - so put on your 3D glasses and get your mind blown!

Tripper originally hails from California but he’s been part of the local art scene in Portland since 2002.  Locals have probably seen Tripper’s work on the cover of the Mercury or if you’re lucky, you’ve been able to visit interactive installations such as Lookie House!

Tripper wants his art to make you laugh and feel happy - so if cats holding hot dogs or eating tacos, bears combing their hair, wiener-mobiles, and grinning cassette tapes do the trick for you then you’ve got to come check out the feature wall of Tripper’s work!  People in the shop love interacting with his work by seeing it in 3D. Take a peep at the new t-shirt designs and rad sticker packs as well as distinctive enamel pins that will have you truly upping your pin game!

Get to know Ruth the Tooth, the spunky heroine of Tripper’s brand new book The Real Story of Ruth the Tooth!  This bright and snazzy book comes with ChromaDepth 3D glasses and a read-along record voiced by Tripper himself, along with his wife and daughter.  The story features a cast of colorful characters such as Rip Van Winkle and the Tooth Fairy!  Every page is fantastically illustrated, and the tale is adventurous and funny.

Read our Q&A with Tripper to learn more about future projects and other things from the inside of his head!

What do you predict for your business in the future?
At this moment right now I'm not totally sure. I have a lot of interest and directions I am inspired to go in. I'm coming out with a 3D book/vinyl record project I've been working on for a half year now.  And there's going to be a lot of promotion going on with that. I have a childhood dream of building a mini golf resort that is still in the planning stages. I have plans to start a secret space cult (shhhhh). I'm sure it will be more of the same as well though.

What do you predict for the art/maker world in general?
It's an interesting time right now. It feels like a lot of things are changing in the world. On one hand it feels like there's a trend towards know your maker/ custom culture, and in the other the middle class is shrinking and millennials value their devices and experience over objects. I do like the idea of a more experience-based art/ craft movement.

Who is your current celebrity crush?
Reggie Watts.

What art and craft fairs and events are you looking forward to in the coming year? (Besides ours, of course!)
I'm nervous, but I'm doing the Brooklyn Renegade this summer. I've never flown to a craft fair before, so I'll be trying out a new setup. I'm having a huge show at Upper Playground this July though that I'm super pumped about. It's called Shrub Life. I'm using it as an opportunity to study plants.

Favorite word and/or swear word?
I just started a list of favorite words. "Smorgasbord" is a standout.

What are you reading or what podcast are you listening to?
I just got a book (at the Crafty Wonderland Spring Art + Craft Market) from Microcosm Publishing called Mostly True. I guess it's actually a magazine, but it's about hobo graffiti and trains.

Do you carry an umbrella?  What is your stance on umbrellas in Portland?
No, but I think if someone is going to be pegged as an outsider for carrying one, that's dumb. Some people just got their hairs did.

Check out numberstar.com for more.  We wish you the best Tripper!  Congrats on Ruth the Tooth!  And good luck at Brooklyn Renegade!

It's finally Spring! The pink trees are bursting with blossoms, the tulips are still vibrant, and the sun sometimes blinds us by peeking out from behind those tumultuous clouds! When we're looking for new supplies or seeking inspiration, Collage is always our first stop. They have an awesome assortment of art and craft supplies that follow the latest trends, plus tons of fun giftable items. It's so much better than the big box craft supply stores! We LOVE Collage and we know you will too!

If craft supplies aren't your thing, or if you say you're not crafty (we won't believe you - we think everyone is crafty), you can still enjoy the gift items, blank journals, desk accessories and more that make up the new Collage Annex! For some serious eye candy, check out their Instagram @collageannex! You can see the Collage Annex in person at 1607 NE Alberta St., just down the block from their Alberta St. supply store.

Collage is locally-owned and has been a top level sponsor of our Art + Craft Markets for years. They are the folks behind our free DIY Area, where our attendees can take a break from all the shopping and get crafty themselves. We are always excited to see what project they plan to do at our show. This year, at our Spring Art + Craft Market on Saturday, May 20th, visitors can decorate a canvas backpack with rubber stamps and markers – perfect for carrying around crafty purchases!

artist of the month

May Artist of the Month: Hillockburn Farm

May Artist of the Month: Hillockburn Farm

May is here and (hopefully!) ushering in some long-awaited SUN to PDX!  Along with it comes our May Artist of the Month, Rebecca Kaihani, owner and operator of Hillockburn Farm!

Hillockburn Farm specializes in high quality, handmade, small batch, natural body care products, and believe us when we tell you THEY. SMELL. AMAZING. Rebecca started creating natural products for friends and family as a hobby and then expanded to selling her wares on a national level; recently she opened her own shop in NE Portland!

Spring seems like the perfect time to treat yourself to some wonderful-smelling Hillockburn Farm soaps like Brown Sugar Fig, Citron Honey Coriander, Cherry Almond, Rosemary Peppermint, or Heff Beer.  Or better yet, treat your mom for Mother’s Day - perhaps to a facial in a bar of soap (aka Peppermint, Tea Tree and Activated Charcoal)! Come into Crafty Wonderland to pick up something sweet - this month we have featured other Hillockburn Farm products along with the soaps we usually carry, such as aromatic bath salts, bath milk, vegan balm, or if you’re the indecisive type, a “Mix Bag” - 10oz bags of randomly selected pieces from their soap collection.

Keep in mind that Hillockburn Farm donates 10% of their annual profits to different local charitable organizations, so you can feel even better about supporting them.  We encourage you to check out their website, https://www.hillockburnfarm.com/ as well as visit their new storefront (grand opening May 12!) and read on to find out what this super cool, outgoing lady boss had to say in response to our blog questions!

What do you predict for the art/maker world?
They/we are now in demand. It feels like consumers are looking for unique items that can’t found at your giant chain store…that’s great for all the artists and makers out there.

Who is your current celebrity crush?
Olivia Munn and Jason Bateman…if they ever ended up together I would DIE!!!

Who is your current political crush?
Smokey the Bear….because only YOU can prevent forest fires!!

What art and craft fairs and events are you looking forward to in the coming year? (Besides ours, of course!)
Crafty is clearly a favorite!!! But we also LOVE the St. Johns fair, it’s a great vibe and hello…MARCHING BANDS!!!!

Favorite new local artist?
Loving T with Upper Metal Class! She’s crazy nice and her jewelry is great…plus she’s got a rad new shop on Sandy!

Favorite word and/or swear word?
I’m trying to swear less…so I’m using new words in place of swear words Fart = F*ck, Sugar = Sht…they aren’t nearly as satisfying but, in a pinch they get the job done without sounding like a filthy f*cking sailor. Shit, that slipped out. Dammit! Ugh!!!

What are you currently reading or what podcast are you listening to?
Neither…I’m so lame! But in the shop I’m usually listening to the Broken Bells station on Pandora.

Favorite drink?
Booze: Bloody Mary ONLY IF it’s made with bacon flavor vodka! Currently obsessed with Holman’s on 28th.
Beer: Asam-Bock at Stammtisch, also on 28th
Side note - both of these places are within walking distance of our store…so please, go get a drink at either place, then stop by so we can talk about it!!!

Do you carry an umbrella?  What's your stance on umbrellas?
I own one umbrella….It’s a little thing that I keep in my car for an “emergency”. Oddly enough I had to use it once in an actual emergency. While driving down 205, I saw a dude crash on his motorcycle…it was POURING outside, several people pulled over to help the dude! Once we got him as comfortable as possible, I pulled out my umbrella in an attempt to keep him dry while we waited for the ambulance to arrive. Total score!  But personally, I don’t use them….if it’s too bad out there I use my hood, you know, the hands-free umbrella attached to most jackets!!!
