Chapman Swifts Print
A highly anticipated annual event in Portland is the roosting of the swifts in the Chapman Elementary school chimney on September evenings. About an hour before the sun sets thousands of migrating swifts gather overhead to prepare for their roost. Then suddenly, they coordinate to fly in a giant circle that swoops around and around and then starts to spirals down into the chimney. Around and around they go until eventually every last bird has somehow miraculously fit into the chimney. It is truly a sight to behold!
